CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Police (WVSP) has announced the creation of a new Violent Crime Task Force (VCTF) aimed at solving cold cases and tackling violent crime throughout the state.
According to a WVSP statement, the task force will focus on investigating, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals involved in violent offenses, as well as reopening unsolved cases that remain unresolved across West Virginia.
The VCTF will operate as a multi-agency effort, bringing together personnel from the West Virginia State Police, the Monongalia County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the FBI. It will also collaborate with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, along with forensic experts from the WVSP Forensic Laboratory and specialists from the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI).

State police officials emphasized the need for a dedicated team to address the high volume of unsolved violent crimes statewide.
“This initiative recognizes the importance of bringing closure to victims and their families by prioritizing cold case investigations and violent crime enforcement,” the WVSP release stated.
While the task force will be under the general leadership of the WVSP, it will rely on partnerships with multiple investigative and intelligence agencies to ensure a comprehensive approach to solving crimes across West Virginia.
