The West Virginia State Police has unveiled a new initiative, the Violent Crime Task Force (VCTF), to enhance investigations into violent crimes and long-standing cold cases throughout the state.
Formed through a partnership between the West Virginia State Police, the Monongalia County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the task force will work closely with multiple law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels to resolve unsolved cases.

A key component of the VCTF’s mission will involve forensic analysis and intelligence gathering. The task force will coordinate efforts with the West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), and the West Virginia Intelligence Exchange (WVIX) to identify perpetrators. Additionally, investigators will leverage the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) to generate leads and connect cases to known offenders.
While all participating agencies will contribute to the initiative, the West Virginia State Police will take the lead in managing operations. The formation of the task force signals a strengthened commitment to solving violent crimes, addressing case backlogs, and ensuring justice for victims and their families .
