Former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has been appointed to the board of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-partisan group focused on fiscal policy and government spending. The organization announced his addition on Wednesday.
The Committee, founded in 1981 and based in Washington, D.C., works to educate the public and policymakers on financial issues impacting the federal budget. Alongside Manchin, former Utah Senator Mitt Romney has also joined the board.
“We are honored to welcome both Senators Joe Manchin and Mitt Romney as they help us tackle the country’s fiscal challenges,” said Maya MacGuineas, the organization’s president. “Throughout their careers, they demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility and were willing to make the tough decisions necessary to address the growing national debt.”

MacGuineas praised Manchin’s extensive public service, which spans decades as a West Virginia leader—from secretary of state to governor and later a 14-year tenure in the U.S. Senate. She emphasized his bipartisan approach to policy and advocacy for financial stability in Washington.
Manchin, who spent most of his career as a Democrat before registering as an independent in 2023, left the Senate in January. His political shift fueled speculation about a potential future campaign. His former seat is now occupied by Republican Jim Justice, West Virginia’s former governor .
