Charleston, WV – The West Virginia Humanities Council has announced an immediate suspension of its statewide grant programs, following an unexpected cut in federal funding.
The council, which supports cultural and educational initiatives across the state, issued the statement on Monday, April 7, 2025, attributing the sudden halt to a funding freeze from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The NEH typically provides the federal support necessary for the council to fund and distribute grants to community organizations.
Earlier this month, the NEH sent an official Notice of Grant Termination to all state humanities councils, including West Virginia’s, under new directives from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The notice outlined the cancellation of existing federal funding streams, effective immediately, with no further funds expected for the remainder of the year.

Without the federal resources, the West Virginia Humanities Council says it cannot sustain its grants program and is forced to pause all current and future awards indefinitely. Officials noted the uncertainty surrounding when — or if — congressional funding will resume.
“Until we receive new appropriations, we have no choice but to suspend grantmaking operations,” a council representative stated.
The announcement raises concern among cultural organizations and nonprofits across West Virginia that rely on Humanities Council support for programming and outreach. As this situation develops, WOAY will continue to provide updates on any potential resolutions or legislative actions that may impact the council’s future operations .
